DETAIL Prize 2016




For the seventh time, DETAIL is awarding the international DETAIL Prize.
The declared aim of the DETAIL Prize is to highlight the importance of architecture for society, to strengthen the role of architects in public, and to promote networking among architects, industrialists, developers and politicians.
 
The judges are looking for realizations in which the overall design concept and the detailing are brought together in a coherent way. The DETAIL Prize awards future-oriented, innovative projects from different disciplines that go beyond the established standard. They should display outstanding architectural and technical qualities and offer solutions of the type generally seen in the DETAIL journal.


 
PROCEDURE

Entries must be submitted online from 17 May to 30 June 2016. The DETAIL editorial team will nominate the most compelling projects from all the entries. The projects will be assigned to the respective categories (DETAIl Prize, Special Prize - Detail Inside, Structure, Readers' Prize) by the DETAIL editorial team in line with their main focus. Outstanding interdisciplinary projects with an interdisciplinary concept which stand out on account of their individual detail solutions and high-quality architecture and impress will be nominated by the DETAIL editorial team for the grand prize, the DETAIL Prize.
 
In a second step, a renowned interdisciplinary and international jury will on 19 July 2016 behind closed doors in Munich select from among the nominations the respective winners of each category of the DETAIL Prize 2016. The best projects nominated for the main prize and the prize-winning projects in each category will be publicly presented by the respective office at a presentation event in Berlin on Friday, 11 November 2016 in the morning. The presentation is obligatory in the case of a nomination or a designation to the winner. 
 
The prize-winners will be handed their awards at a festive award ceremony to be held on the evening of 11 November 2016 with invited guests from architecture, industry, politics and business. An exhibition on the DETAIL Prize 2016 at BAU 2017, the world's leading trade fair for architecture, materials and systems in Munich between 16 and 21 January 2017 will round off the presentation of the projects.

The competition will be organized and run by the Institut für internationale Architektur-Dokumentation without recourse to the ordinary courts of law. There shall be no legal right to participation.
 

 
PRIZE CATEGORIES

The prize is awarded in four categories:
 
DETAIL Prize
A building that is especially characterized by well-designed, future-oriented and technically-innovative details within an outstanding overall concept.

DETAIL Readers' Prize          
The favourite project of DETAIL readers as selected in an online vote.
                              
Special prize - DETAIL inside
A particularly exemplary project in the field of interior design, construction and architecture. Architects, interior-designers, and designers are all encouraged to submit their projects.
       
Special prize - DETAIL structure
An outstanding project with an unusual structural engineering and architectural solution that has been developed in close cooperation between construction engineers and architects. Besides architects, the prize is also aimed at civil and structural engineers.


 
PRIZE MONEY AND AWARD CEREMONY
 
The four winners will receive prize money € 5,000 in total. The jury will decide how to distribute the prize money among the individual winners. The jury reserves the right to commend entries of particular quality. All participants will be informed of the jury's decision and the results of the reader voting online. The authors of the best projects nominated for the main prize and the prize winners will be announced immediately after the conclusion of jury decision in July 2016 and after completion of the reader-voting in October 2016.
 
One representative (office partner) from each office whose project has been nominated best for the main prize and from the offices of the prize-winning projects of the other categories will be invited to the public presentations in Berlin on 11 November 2016 and to the evening gala award ceremony to be handed their prizes. In the case of an award wining project the presentation is mandatory. During the public presentations (in English or German) the respective planning office will present their winning project.
